What her business does

Messy Merlin is a small, Horsham-based business run by local mum, Shelley We offer a range of bespoke and personalised handmade wooden gifts, all of which you can see on our facebook page Our main product is our Personalised Giant Ruler Height Charts and we have been really busy fulfilling orders for these recently and have sent them all over the country Our chopping boards with a loved one’s handwriting or children’s drawings burnt onto them by hand are also really popular and make lovely keepsake gifts

Her business journey and how she arrived at the business ideas and started her own business

I have always been creative and loved to make things When my friends began having squidgy little bubbas I had the perfect excuse to make again and enjoyed creating unique, hand-made gifts for them A few years down the line… a wedding, a puppy and two little beasties later…Messy Merlin was born out of a lifetime love of making and inspired by the many cheeky, sticky little people that I am lucky to have in my life I work from my kitchen table around a part-time nursing career and a busy family life I particularly love making something a bit quirky and I pride myself in making sure that every customer gets something completely unique that has been made with a lot of love ❤️💜💙💚💛

What she finds most rewarding about having her own business

Being able to do the school run, looks after my toddler and be there for the girl’s hectic social calendars whilst still being able to earn money and be creative 😊

How she approaches being a mum and an entrepreneur

Honestly?! It’s Chaos! But I think that’s just us! 😂 I work when my busy toddler is asleep so I am often up late using the kitchen table as a workbench! During the day I steal a few minutes here and there to sand a few planks of wood, reply to emails, sketch some designs or post orders-usually when she is distracted with lunch or play doh!! My family will always come first and I try to give them the best of my time and energy and I have been known to actually say no to the odd order when particularly busy as I know my limits!!

The biggest challenges she has faced in her business
Time management! But this is nothing new-It is something that I have struggled with all my life! The main problem is that I will always prioritise making a mess over cleaning up!!!
How she overcame those challenges

Good question!! You should see our house!!! It is something that I need to work on, and even if I wasn’t doing this I would find something else more important that cleaning! Really I need to earn enough to pay someone to tidy up after me 😂

What do you celebrate as accomplishments in your business?

Every sale is an accomplishment! I love to see photos of my makes in their new homes! I recently won a #sbs Small Business Sunday award from Theo Phaphitis which is very exciting
